NADMO to plant 10,000 trees in Obuasi and Adansi North

Akrokerri (Ash), July 22, GNA- The Obuasi office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has initiated a programme for schools and members of the community to plant 10,000 trees in the Obuasi Municipality and Adansi North district to help prevent windstorm disasters.

Mr Marcellus Kow Freiku, the Obuasi Municipal NADMO Co-ordinator, who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Akrokerri on Friday after distributing seedlings to some schools in the municipality, said 4,000 tress have been planted since the exercise started last month.

He said: "It is NADMO's target that by the end of the programme, 10,000 trees including mahogany species would have been planted". Mr Freiku, the Obuasi Municipal NADMO Co-ordinator, said at least 32 schools had been involved in the programme, and that the organisation was undertaking the exercise in collaboration with the municipal assembly and the district assembly.

The NADMO Co-ordinator, who is also responsible for the Adansi North, said the Forestry Commission supplied the seedlings through their afforestation programme which NADMO was part of it.

Mr Freiku said NADMO disaster volunteers in the Akrokerri and its environs nursed the seedlings and that the programme had become necessary because the communities needed to involved in windstorm disaster prevention.
