NAFCO CEO reveals major changes to company’s operations

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), George Abradu-Otoo, has stated that the company has introduced major internal controls to improve its operations and prevent waste.

According to him, the company has strengthened its auditing, procurement and food safety functions since he assumed office.

Speaking to the media after NAFCO’s Annual General Meeting in Accra on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Abradu-Otoo said the changes are necessary to improve accountability within the state-owned company.

He disclosed that NAFCO previously operated without a dedicated audit department, creating gaps in the monitoring of its activities.

“Before I assumed office, there was no audit department, and people were doing what they liked,” he said.

Abradu-Otoo said his administration had since tightened expenditure controls to ensure that money spent by the company delivers value.

“We have controlled expenditure, and so if you incur costs and there is no value, I will not pay,” he added.

He added that the company is also strengthening its procurement processes to ensure that purchases are properly assessed and aligned with NAFCO’s operational needs.

He further disclosed that NAFCO was working to expand its storage network across the country, with plans to ensure that every district has a warehouse.

According to him, expanding the warehouse network will improve the company’s ability to store food commodities closer to farming communities and help reduce challenges associated with food storage.

He said the move would also support NAFCO’s role in providing a ready market for farmers by giving the company greater capacity to take in and preserve excess food production.

Abradu-Otoo said the reforms were part of broader efforts to build a more efficient and financially sustainable NAFCO capable of effectively supporting Ghana’s food security system.
