NAPO is a medical doctor

Napo Bawumia Run Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh is the vice presidential candidate of the NPP

We recently came across a trending and rather misleading YouTube video by a commentator suggesting that Hon. Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the NPP running mate of Dr. Bawumia is not a medical doctor.

Per this write-up, we the medical school classmates (1994 Year Group) want to state categorically and authoritatively that Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh is a medical doctor who graduated from the School of Medical Sciences (SMS), University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (now School of Health Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology-KNUST).

We were admitted into School of Medical Sciences (SMS, UST) in the 1988/89 academic year and graduated in 1994, having successfully completed the prerequisite degrees BSc. Human Biology and MBChB. For the sake of clarity, MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Chirugie) is the medical degree awarded in most British institutions, and by extension, many commonwealth countries (including India and Nigeria) that inherited the British system of medical education. This is sometimes written as MBBS or MBBChir.

After graduation in 1994, Napo indeed went to Maastricht in the Netherlands to pursue a Master’s Degree in Clinical Epidemiology after completing Housemanship at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in 1995, which was then a one year mandatory program. Thereafter, he left for the United Kingdom to pursue a specialisation in General Surgery culminating in Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS), making him a surgeon by specialisation..

He is very closely networked with his medical school classmates, many of whom are still practising in Ghana, the United States and in the United Kingdom. His completing medical school and doing housemanship at the KNUST and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is a matter of public record that can be verified.

We, as a group, are apolitical and only hope that this write-up will help in correcting the reported impression.
