Social media is abuzz with mixed reactions following the confirmation of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as the running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 elections.
The National Council of the NPP officially endorsed Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO on Thursday, July 4, 2024, a decision that has ignited a flurry of comments online.
A significant portion of the discussion revolves around comparisons between NAPO and Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate to former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Both served as Education Ministers, making their track records a focal point of debate.
Supporters of NAPO praise his achievements, particularly highlighting the Free Senior High School (FreeSHS) program.
A post praising the NPP ticket read, "Competent Vice President Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia (Mr Digitalisation) and Competent Former Education Minister NAPO (FreeSHS) vs. Incompetent Vice/President John Mahama (Dumsor) and Incompetent Former Education Minister Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang (Chalk, Cancellation of Alawa)."
Critics argue that Professor Opoku-Agyemang, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, brings superior academic and administrative credentials.
One user’s harsh critique stated, “How can you compare an arrogant empty head NAPO to a world-class academia Prof Jane. Napo should be compared to a BORLA BIRD.”
“No sensible person will compare Jane Naana's tenure as Education Minister to that of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Education Minister and say Jane Naana is better.
“Similarly, no one would compare Mahama as Vice to Bawumia as Vice and say Mahama was better. Bawumia and NAPO ticket beats Mahama and Jane Naana all around,” a user argued.
The debate has also seen the emergence of negative assessments of NAPO's tenure, with some social media users documenting what they call “the ten (10) cardinal sins of Dr. Mattew Opoku Prempeh, NPP’s running mate for the 2024 elections.”
“NDC since Naana Came to politics have not written the 10 good deeds of Jane Naana, but they have written 10 sins of NAPO,” another added.
“Dr. NAPO as Education Minister cleared the over GHS 130 million left behind by Jane Naana as the Education Minister.”
