A member of the National Democratic Congress Party’s (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amaliba, says the NDC is not against an appointee exhibiting strong moral principles, honesty and decency.

This comment by the lawyer comes after an Accra High Court sentenced three former government officials to various terms in prison.

The three were convicted for causing financial loss of $4m to the state.

A former board chairman of the National Communication Authority (NCA), Eugene Baffoe-Bonnie, was handed a 6-year imprisonment term for his part in the scandal.

William Matthew Tetteh Tevie, a former Director-General of the NCA and Alhaji Salifu Mimina Osman, a former Deputy National Security Coordinator were each sentenced to five years imprisonment respectively.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amaliba, said when government appointees are given positions the onus lies on the said appointees to serve the state wholeheartedly.

According to him, the NDC is therefore not against the decision of the courts to reprimand former appointee accountable.

He, however, stated that a close look at the case shows a strong evidence of a travesty of justice.

“At the end of the case the accused persons filed a submission of no case which the Judge ruled against. An appeal was then made against the Judge’s ruling, one would have thought that the judge would not go on to pronounce judgement until the court appeal had finished its work…the people who were supposed to me jailed were four, but one of them was acquitted and discharged by the court of appeal during the trail. This should tell you that the not court is not sacrosanct. I was expecting that by this time cases like cash for seat, UNIPASS, others should be in court by now”, he added.

He stated that it is easy for a party in power to send an opponent to jail.
