Techiman (B/A) May 11, GNA - Mr Pierre Ankomah, Techiman Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has deplored the politicisation of the work of the unit committees, which he described as the grass root structures of the Local Government system. He said the trend had rendered the committees dysfunctional in most communities.

Mr Ankomah was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the end of the celebration of the NCCE's Constitution Week celebrations in the Municipality on the theme: "Enhancing Citizens' Participation In

Local Governance For The Eradication Of Poverty". Nana Kofi Nkrumah Appiah, the Nifahene of Tanoso (Sub-chief) said some members of the unit committees had developed lackadaisical attitude towards work due to the lack of incentives.

He suggested need for government to reduce the size of the committee and pay ex-gratia awards to former members.

The Chief of Fiaso, near Forikrom, Nana Kwarteng Ameyaw, said an unnamed American friend had donated 16 million cedis towards the completion of the Fiaso Community Clinic. 11 May 05
