The move was to ensure that future riotous activities from such groups were avoided, the NCCE stated in a statement signed by Mrs Joyce Afutu, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
The statement said the alleged forceful removal of the Ashanti Regional Security Advisor from office and the attack by the Delta Force on the Circuit Court in Kumasi last week, was unfortunate.
The statement said that such acts, threatens the security of the state and breakdown of law and order, peace and security in the country.
“It also a breach of the law and do not auger well for our quest to consolidate Ghana’s democracy and Rule of Law as enshrined in the Preamble of the 1992 Fourth Republican Constitution, the statement said.
The statement cautioned all Ghanaians that the discourse of activities of vigilantism should not be politicized but should be addressed dispassionately with the nation’s interest and security at heart.
The NCCE urged the Ghana Police Service as a matter of urgency to hasten investigations into the matter, apprehend and prosecute perpetrators in accordance with the law without fear or favour.
The statement said the commission commended bodies, institutions and peace loving Ghanaians who condemns the acts of the vigilante groups.
“The commissions counts on all Ghanaians particularly the youth to rise up and say ’No To Vigilantism’, remain calm and trust that authorities mandated to ensure peace and security will do their work,” the statement said.
The statement also urged religious bodies to use their platforms to preach against vigilante groups.
