Mr Kenneth Kponor, Volta Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) said extensive sensitisation would be needed for a successful registration of citizens for the Ghana Card by the National Identification Authority.

He said cursory observations indicated that many people, especially rural dwellers had little knowledge on the exercise and turned up at centres without required documents and information.

Mr Kponor in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the Commission also observed that some people massed up at the Electoral Commission's offices and limited registration centres by the Electoral Commission for new voters demanding the Ghana Card.

He said vigorous education was therefore needed for the success of the exercise.

The Director said public education was not an event but a process and that the NCCE must be resourced to deliver sustained sensitization ahead of such exercises.

“We need ample time to engage people effectively in their homes, offices and other places”, he stated.

Mr Kponor said independent governance institutions must also be supported to help deepen sensitisations.

The NCCE has been monitoring the limited voter registration exercise across the country, and provided public education when needed.
