Yendi, (N/R), July 31, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised a stakeholders' seminar as part of preparations to ensure peaceful district assembly and unit committee elections in the Tamale Metropolis and the Yendi District.

The two districts did not elect assembly and unit committee members in the last elections because of the security situation in Dagbon.

The seminar was sponsored by Action Aid International Ghana for stakeholders to address issues bordering on peaceful elections.

Mr Sylvester Kanyi, the Deputy Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, said the commission would mount platforms between July and August for the candidates to present their programmes to the people.

He said defamatory questions that tend to destroy the reputation of the candidates would not be permitted.

Alhaji Mohammed Asibi Azonko, the Yendi District Coordinating Director, said the law enforcement agencies and the District Security Committee (DISEC) were putting in place measures to ensure peaceful elections in the two districts

He appealed to other stakeholders who played roles in the 2004 elections to assist the Electoral Commission to organize the elections. Alhaji Sulemana Iddi Alhassan, the acting District Director of the NCCE, said the commission had drawn up a voter education programme covering 42 electoral areas and 57 unit committees.
