NCS Shutdown: Ghana's Premier ISP Under Fire

Sat, 6 Dec 2003 Source: --

The premises of Network Computer Systems(NCS), the first and largest Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Ghana, was cordoned off by the police sometime last week. As a result, Internet services have been severely disrupted in most parts of Ghana.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) is amongst the numerous affected clients. GNA distributes its newsfeeds to the various Ghanaian media through an email account of NCS. Various Ghanaian media, who are subscribers of GNA, have reported that the news transmission by GNA through email has stopped completely.

The official website of the Republic of Ghana (www.ghana.gov.gh) has disappeared completely from the Internet. According to Internet experts this disruption is probably caused by the fact that the technicians of NCS are denied physical access to the office which makes it impossible to perform necessary operational tasks.

A source who has been following events for Ghanaweb said "This could be a personal matter between CEO of NCS, Dr Quaynor, and Sam Jonah CEO of AGC. I am told that the headquarters of NCS is a personal property of Sam Jonah and he is demanding its return. The case is already in court, but it seems that the police is siding with one party and has taken action."

"The gh domain is administered from within the NCS complex. I cannot get to any link in the gh (Ghana) domain, including the web site of the University of Ghana. I also know that the Ghana Government "portal" is not hosted by NCS directly. In fact, the Ghana Government site was moved from NCS when the Kufuor government came in very, very crudely." said Amos Anyimadu - a professor at the university of Ghana

NCS is a leader in network services and was the first in West Africa to introduce the Internet.

Nobody knows when the situation will be normalised.
