Former President John Dramani Mahama would be the man to beat in the NDC flagbearship race if he decides to contest, Nana Akomea, Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), has said.
Many bigwigs of the NDC such as former Trade Minister Ekow Spio-Garbrah, former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Sylvester Mensah, former Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, Goosie Tanoh, Majority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, former Vice Chancellor of UPSA Prof Joshua Alabi, and Second Deputy Speaker Alban Bagbin have emerged or shown interest in contesting to become the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2020 polls.
But speaking on Newsfile on Multi TV Saturday 6 May about the race for leadership of the NDC ahead of the 2020 national elections, Nana Akomea said Mr Mahama stood tall among his contemporaries.
“I still believe that if the incumbent John Mahama is to contest he will be the man to beat especially if they are going to have four or five contestants,” he told show host Samson Lardy Anyenini.
“This is because the incumbent has an organisation on the ground by reason of the fact that he is the incumbent. All these District Chief Executives who are stalwarts of the party at the district level and the constituency level, the Ministers of State [he appointed], that is an organisation. His wall chest is bigger. You are starting from scratch to build up structures on the ground to prosecute your campaign but he [Mahama] already has them so he has the advantage.”
Meanwhile, Mr Mahama is yet to openly state his position on whether he would contest or not.
