NDC Charges Kufuor With Treason

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the alleged declaration by Mr John A. Kufuor, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of his party's victory in last Thursday's general election on Saturday evening was "not only an unconstitutional act but also a treasonable act".

The NDC stated that, by the 1992 constitution, only the Electoral Commissioner has the mandate to declare the results of such elections. At a press conference at the party's headquarters, Alhaji Issifu Ali, Chairman of the NDC, said the NDC has written to the Electoral Commission on the alleged declaration and will await public response from the commission.

Alhaji Ali said Mr Kufuor's declaration constitutes a criminal act, an abrogation of constitutional and legal provisions in a manner that engenders civil strife, and further said that the police have a responsibility to question the basis of Mr Kufuor's declaration. The NDC chairman also abhorred the conduct of some FM stations and TV3 for the platform it gave the NPP to broadcast their supposed victory.

Alhaji Ali said contrary to agreed guidelines by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the EC for the declaration of the results and the announcement of the ultimate winner, it suspects some media practitioners are colluding with the NPP to transmit results, which were clearly incorrect, unconstitutional and illegal. It therefore called on the EC and the police to take steps to bring them to book.
