Auditors looking into the books of the Adansi West District have discovered that funds totalling about ?450 million meant for projects cannot be accounted for.

The auditors searched in vain for evidence that the cash was really used to purchase electricity poles, roofing sheets, iron rods and other materials for projects in the district.

Sources close to the Assembly told The Accra Mail that the funds were diverted under the instructions of the former District Chief Executive, Mr. Adu Mensah, to induce voters for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2000 general election.

The sources said as a result, the Administrator of the Common Fund has imposed a penalty of ?220 million on the Assembly.

The Assembly has taken legal action to recover about 90% of the Poverty Alleviation Fund.
