NDC Europe to Support Local Communities against Child Sex Exploitation

Sun, 14 Jun 2009 Source: --

NDC Europe has embarked on a Project to support selected Constituencies in Ghana afflicted by the phenomenon of Child Sex exploitation. Ghana is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the AU Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. It is in this spirit that NDC Europe has set out to help Ghanaian communities which are most affected by the abuse of children’s fundamental rights as enshrined in the Ghanaian constitution, UN and AU charters.

NDC Europe is a network of NDC branches in Europe which presently includes Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Austria and France. We aim to strengthen the structures of the NDC Party in Europe and Ghana, build our alliances with mainstream EU Socialist Parties with the aim of enhancing the Democracy and Governance system in Ghana

It is our firm believe in the NDC that investing in children and young people today means investing in the future. Young people with quality education, positive ideals, skills and a sense of social responsibility are likely to become adults with a commitment to sound social values, ready and able to make a constructive contribution to the economic and social development of their communities. Children and young people with these positive qualities are also likely in their turn to become caring parents for their own children. The NDC pledged in its manifesto to uphold the universal conventions on Human Rights which includes protecting children from any form of abuses. There’s an opportunity for us in government to ultimately reach out and support children and the most vulnerable within our communities who are often exploited and co-opted into sex slave.

The Project therefore aims to support the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The initiative which has received support from several Swedish NGOs will see a number of studies on the phenomenon and to explore options of enforcing already existing laws or recommend implementing new policies and legislation at the National, Regional and Constituency levels to reduce the incidences of abusing children. The constituencies earmarked to benefit from the Project include Klottey-Korle Constituency in Accra, Walewale in the West Mamprusi District and Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region.

The Project is under the Leadership of Mrs Angela Aku Tarras-Wahlberg (nee Gaveh), Women’s Organizer of Sweden NDC Branch and Head of NDC Europe Women and Children Working Group. She will be supported by Ms Millicent Duphey of the Norwegian NDC Branch and Ms Esther Grobe of the German NDC–Hamburg Branch with the full support of the entire NDC Europe Executives.
