THE EASTERN REGIONAL Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Adi Ankama, has denied that the various development projects being carried out in the Afram Plains district are being financed by some money left by the ousted National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
He said the NPP government came to inherit empty coffers and, therefore, described the rumour as a blatant lie by those who are bent on destroying the government.
Nana Ankama said this when he and others accompanied the Eastern Regional Minister, Dr. Francis Osafo Mensah, to pay a two-day working visit to the Afram Plains district to inspect projects and interact with the people.
He said all the projects currently going on in the district are through the funds sourced and generated by the NPP government. He, therefore, urged the people to support and co-operate with the government to develop the area for all to enjoy.
The visit took the minister to a number of communities, such as Ntonaboma, Supom, Adeemra, Amankwakrom, Tease, Maame Krobo, Forifori and many others.
On his arrival at Ekye-Amanfrom, the minister told the chief and the people that the government will surely work according to its manifesto to enhance the living standard of the populace.
He described the Afram Plains district as important to the NPP government since many communities in the country depend on it for their food requirement.
He promised that road networks in the area will be improved to enable drivers cart foodstuff and other items to the urban centrer without any problem.
To this end, the minister said, the Kwahu Tafo-Adawso road had been given on contract for it to re-constructed and tarred and hoped that the whole job will be completed before the government’s first term of office ends in 2004.
At Ntonaboma, the minister commissioned a clinic jointly built by the people and the district at the cost of ?135 million. In his welcome address, Okofrobour Kwaku Anokye II, Agyaadehene, said the people came to settle on the land in 1964 from the Brong Ahafo Region as a result of the creation of the Akosombo Dam and they were made to join the Eastern Region for administrative purposes.
He, therefore, appealed to the government through the minister to allow the chiefs in the area to join the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs since they are in the Eastern Region, but they attend meetings with the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs.
The minister commended the people for their communal spirit and urged them to do more, since the government alone cannot shoulder all the problems facing the country.
He also praised the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Afram Plains district, Mr. Benjamin Kwadwo Anokye, for his good work and desire to develop the area, which was neglected by the previous governments over the years.
A three-classroom block was commissioned by the minister at Supom. The chief of the town, Nana Kwasi Diawuo II, thanked the DCE and the Afram Plains District Assembly (APDA) for their assistance to ensure the completion of the building.
He also thanked the Member of Parliament (MP) for Afram Plains North, Hon. Joseph Tsatsu Agbenu, for donating 55 bags of cement for the project. The minister urged the people to pay their taxes and rates as their contribution towards nation’s building, since the government depends on their them to generate income to develop the country.
At Adeemra where the minister commissioned a five-classroom block for the Roman Catholic Primary School, Rev. Fr. Alex Osei Awuah, praised the European Union (EU) for its financial support to the rehabilitation of the school.
He used the occasion to appeal to the government, EU and other organizations to assist the people to put up a permanent building for the girls’ vocational school in the town to enable it to train more girls to acquire employable skills.
He also appealed to the authorities to provide a fire tender for the Fire Station in the town since there is none, though the area is noted for frequent fire outbreak.
A representative of EU, Dr. Kwaku Osafo, promised to commit EU to assist and urged the people to let his organisation know their problems for solution. He said EU has so far assisted in 630 projects in the country and hoped to do more.
Other projects the minister and his entourage commissioned or inspected were Amankwatia Clinic, a slaughter house, a meat shop, a library and the assembly’s hostel, all at Donkokorm, a clinic at Forifori and a market project at Maame Krobo.
An open forum was also organised at Tease which allowed the people to ask questions bothering their minds.
