NDC Loses Big Fish

Tue, 24 Feb 2004 Source: DAILY GUIDE

President Kufuor?s ?All inclusive?Government? policy has, once again, caught another big fish from the NDC camp.

This time round, it is the resigned Member of Parliament for Amenfi West in the Western Region, Mr. Abraham Kofi Asante.

The President nominated and swore him to be a member of the reconstituted board of the VRA.

According to DAILY GUIDE, he is about the fourth person from NDC camp to become part of Kufuor?s ?all?inclusiveness.? The others are Dr. Ibn Chambas who was then NDC MP For Bimbilla and former Deputy Minister, in charge of Tertiary Education in the NDC regime, former Minister of Education, Mr. Ekwow Spio-Gabrah and Mr. Mike Gizo, NDC MP for Shai?Osudoku who was also appointed a member of the National Petroleum Tender Board.

NPP Celebrate Kofi Asante?s Appointment

There was jubilation among the New Patriotic Party (NPP) faithful in the Amenfi West constituency on Monday night when they saw President John Kufuor swear in Mr. Kofi Asante, the former NDC MP for the area, as a member of the new board of directors of the Volta River Authority (VRA). To them the appointment of Mr. Asante, a one-time bitter enemy of the NPP, conformed with President Kufuor?s all-inclusive government philosophy, which embraces all qualified Ghanaians no matter one's political background so that their rich experience could be tapped for the benefit of Mother Ghana.

In a The Heritage interview Mr. Kwesi Salami Blay, a NPP youth leader in Amenfi West, overflowed with joy as he said "God bless Kufuor and his government and God bless Mother Ghana".

According to the youth leader, Kofi Asante has always been their man but given the fact that he held a different political opinion, there was nothing to do but to dissociate oneself from him.

He argued that but for the resignation of Kofi Asante as the MP, the NPP could never have won any parliamentary election in the area.

He prayed for Mr. Asante's success in his new role which, he believed would help champion democracy in the country.

"He should not be perturbed by criticism of his party members who might termed him an opportunist", he advised.

True to form some NDC members in Asankragwa who spoke to The Heritage described Mr. Kofi Asante as "an opportunities and a traitor".

They argued that Mr. Asante should not accept the appointment at a place he used to criticize when he was the Shadow Minister of Energy.

However, some other NDC members described Mr. Asante's appointment as a credit to President Kufuor and said they were ready to defect to the NPP very soon since their idol has been honoured by the NPP without looking at the fact that he is a member of the minority NDC.
