NDC MPs Show Solidarity With Rawlings

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary caucus has pledged its unflinching support to the former President and leader of the party, Flt Lt J.J. Rawlings, for his immense contributions to peace in the country.

It also commended him for his exemplary performance as a United Nations Eminent Person and said he has by this performance made the country proud. The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr A. S. K. Bagbin, made the pledge on behalf of his colleagues when the group called on the former President at his residence in Accra yesterday. He said, “We have called on the leader of our party to assure him of our support and solidarity and also congratulate him on his excellent performance as UN Eminent Person."

He said the former President still plays a crucial role in the affairs of the country, adding that his contribution to political development of the country cannot be wished away. Mr Bagbin said the minority group would work for consensus-building in Parliament to achieve the vision espoused 20 years ago. In a brief speech, Flt. Lt. Rawlings assured the caucus of the party’s support for what he described as “their tenacity of purpose in Parliament”.

He said their work in Parliament would not be without problems and challenges and urged them to remain steadfast in the face of such challenges. He said the political tension being created in the country is a ploy by the government to divert attention from its campaign promises.

Flt. Lt Rawlings decried the politics of deception and lies and appealed to the rank and file of the party not to be intimidated by their opponents. He said it was unfortunate that his June 4 speech was misinterpreted and reiterated the need to uphold the tenets of the June 4 Uprising. The former Vice-President, Professor J. E. A. Mills, called on the party’'s caucus in Parliament to continue to explain the policies of the party to the members as well as non-members of the party.

He urged them to be tolerant and promote democratic governance in the country, adding that “Ghana is important than anyone else”.
