Ms Betty Crosby Mensah, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Afram Plains North, has pledged to improve the lot of women and girls in the area when elected.

The candidate believes that women and children, especially girls, need to be supported to improve their standard of education and livelihood.

She said: “Having been born, bred and schooled in Afram Plains, I know the challenges and difficulties that women and children go through. Many children

especially girls, due to the situation in the area, are made to live with people in the urban areas as helps thereby depriving them of education".

Ms Crosby Mensah was speaking to the Ghana News Agency on the “Women Platform,” an initiative to give voice to women contesting parliamentary seats in

the upcoming elections.

She said she was, therefore, seeking to go to parliament to work in the interest of women to ensure that ‘our girls stayed in the area with their parents to

complete their education’.

According to the candidate, there were many challenges militating against women and girls in the area adding “as a woman who had braved the odds I believe I

have what it takes to champion their cause whiles I serve as a role model to the girls”.

The candidate, who commended former President Rawlings and the NDC for the interest they showed in the development of the Afram Plains, appealed to the

electorates to vote massively for her to continue the good work.

Ms CrosbyMensah holds a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and a B.A in Business Administration. She was a Deputy National Coordinator of the Youth

Employment Authority.

The candidate was the Financial Secretary and Women’s Organiser of the Tertiary Education International Network.

She beat four males including the current Member of Parliament, Mr Aboagye Didier, at the NDC primaries, becoming the first woman ever to contest the seat.
