NDC Replies President Kufuor

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described as unfortunate, President Kufuor’s call on the party to account for an amount of $600 million realised from the sale of part of government shares in Ashanti Goldfields when the NDC was in power. The party says it is strange that President Kufuor is asking it to account for the amount, since proceeds from the sale of state institutions are paid into the Consolidated Fund.

At a durbar at Abogu in the Ashanti Region, President Kufuor called on the NDC to explain to Ghanaians how they spent the 600 million dollars.

But speaking to JOY FM, the NDC’s Director of Communications, John Mahama said President’s Kufuor’s statement should be seen as a political gimmick. “Divestiture receipts are paid into the Consolidated Fund and it is out of the Consolidated Fund that contractors are paid, monies are given to hospitals for health, agriculture, education and all that, and so why he should ask President Rawlings to come and account for $600 million, I find it difficult to phantom”.

“But I guess it is politicking, he is touring Ashanti and meeting NPP crowds and sometimes, you get carried away”, Mr Mahama added.
