Akropong-Akuapem (E/R), Aug. 8, GNA - The Eastern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Anthony Gyampoh has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to release the registration materials to the registration centres to enable registration of voters to continue.
He said it was too early for people to call for the extension of time when in reality the EC was not releasing registration materials on time and in the required quantities which was causing the long queues and delaying the exercise.
Mr Gyampoh maintained that if the registration exercise was extended for a year and the EC continued to release the registration materials to the centres in such limited quantities and at such a slow pace, the queues at the registration centres would continue to exist. He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday after touring the Akropong constituency. Mr Gyampoh said registration was not going on at most of the registration centres he visited in the Eastern Region and in the Akuapem North District on Wednesday because there were no registration materials.
He said the materials arrived at some centres around 1400 hours on Thursday.
He said for greater part of Wednesday and Thursday many of the registration officials at the registration centres were idling about
Mr Gyampoh said it did not make sense for the EC to withhold registration materials for long queues to be formed at the registration centres only for people to call for the extension of time. He there was the need to put pressure on the EC to release the registration materials to enable the people to register.
