NDC concerned about rumours of running mate

Accra, April 3, GNA - The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concern about the recent upsurge in statements and activities of individuals and groups within the party aimed at projecting certain individuals for the position of Running Mate to the NDC Flagbearer, Professor John Evans Atta Mills.

A statement signed by Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary of the Party reminded all members and supporters that the party's constitution, particularly Article 44 mandated the Party's Presidential Candidate to nominate his/her Running Mate in consultation with the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders.

"The NEC wishes to assure all members, supporters and the general public that the process of consultation is on course towards the selection of a suitable Running Mate to partner Professor Mills for victory in the December 2008 elections," the statement said. Consequently, all party faithful, as well as supporters and interest groups both within and outside the party are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution and moderation in their comments and actions on the issue of a Running Mate.

This is to ensure that the unity, cohesion, stability and the good public image required to boost the fortunes of the party in the December, 2008 elections are not needlessly undermined.

The statements said members of NEC were fully alive to their responsibilities in conducting the affairs of the Party, and also recognize individuals' rights to comment and express their views on very important matter of the choice of the NDC Presidential Running Mate. "We, however, appeal to all members, supporters, sympathizers, and indeed the general public to bear with the Party as it goes through the process of the selection of the Running Mate in a democratic manner. "We do hope that this process will be concluded as soon as possible to select a Running Mate whose popularity and acceptance cut across all interest groups within the NDC," the statement added.

Pressed by the GNA on the selection process, Dr Kwabena Adjei, National Chairman, told the GNA that, "the choice of a running mate is a strategic decision and it will not be fair for the flag bearer to be stampeded into taking a decision."

He said discussions on the choice of a running mate for the party were indications of the party's vibrant internal democracy and that Professor Mills was in control of the situation.
