Greater Accra regional organiser of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has denied reports that members of the party threw stones and hurled bottles at the house of opposition flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo at Nima.

There were clashes between supporters of the NDC and the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) which started after supporters of both parties converged on the vicinity of Mr Akufo-Addo’s Nima residence during their respective Keep Fit activities.

Gunshots were fired by men thought to be bodyguards of Mr Akufo-Addo, to keep the supporters of the NDC away.

Speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Monday, 14 November on Class91.3FM, Mr Nukpenu denied that NDC supporters threw stones at Mr Akufo-Addo’s house.

“Show me stones thrown into Nana Akufo-Addo’s home or any material that will provoke any hooligan to shoot guns,” he asked show host Prince Minkah.

He said it will be irresponsible for any police officer to suggest stones were thrown at Nana Akufo-Addo’s house. “We were there with the Nima police. They should come out with a statement telling the public which NDC member threw stones or threw bottles as they are putting” out there.

“We are a political party with cultured leaders and everything we do, we put out statements and caution our people on how we are going to conduct ourselves. We never in our health walk engaged in [anything untoward]. We maintained sanity, we cautioned everybody. The first gunshot from Nana Addo’s house we ignored, the second one we ignored, the third was what irritated most of the youth but there was no provocation for somebody in there to be shooting sporadically in the air,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Director of Communications of the Police, Superintendent Cephas Arthur has said no arrest has been made yet. Both parties are accusing each other of starting the provocation.
