Kumasi, Oct 9, GNA - A functionary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described recent claims that members of the party had defected to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as deceptive and only a ploy calculated at disorganising the NDC.

Mr Alex Sawyer Attivor, chairman of the Kumasi Metropolitan Co-ordinating Committee of the NDC, advised members of the party to ignore such "cheap political propaganda and remain loyal and steadfast to the NDC."

The NDC functionary, who was addressing a meeting of the Committee, said, "No amount of tricks employed by our opponents can ever win or attract our dedicated members to their camp."

Mr Attivor, who is also the chairman of the Asokwa West constituency of the NDC, lauded the leader of the party for organising the demonstration that took place in Kumasi last September 3. He said: "We also acknowledge and commend the boldness of members of the public who though not NDC members joined the demonstration to also register their displeasure at the harsh economic policies of the NPP."

Mr N. Bosie, vice chairman of the committee, stressed the need for the party to quickly hold primaries for the election of parliamentary candidates at the various constituency levels.

Mr Bosie, who is also the chairman for Old Tafo/Suame constituency of the party, said electing the parliamentary candidates early would afford them ample time to market themselves in readiness for the 2004 General Elections.
