Dr Bernard Okoe Boye is a former Minister of Health under the Nana Akufo-Addo government
Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ledzokuku, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has stated that he is not surprised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the parliamentary by-election in the Akwatia constituency held on September 2, 2025.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV on September 5, 2025, Dr Okoe Boye said that the ruling NDC is now performing well, as compared to his party the NPP, which he said is ‘rebuilding,’ and so the defeat was not a surprise to him.
He likened the performance of the NDC to that of English Premier League giants, Liverpool, whom he said one could surely bet would win the league in other terms.
NDC’s Bernard Baidoo wins Akwatia by-election
“People are rational in their behaviour, you know. So, that is one of the reasons why I am not surprised that the NDC won this election. Even before going to Akwatia, I jokingly told a friend that the NDC is like Liverpool now. They are in top form.
“NDC as a party is like Liverpool. All those times when Hearts was beating Kotoko all the time, I remember those times, we always out-manoeuvred the Kotoko form. We always said that we were rebuilding. The NPP is a party that is now trying to even get its ‘house in order’ as we speak,” he said.

About the Akwatia by-election:
Bernard Baidoo, the parliamentary candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), was declared the winner of the Akwatia Constituency by-election, defeating his closest rival, Solomon Asumadu, of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Electoral Commission's Returning Officer for the constituency, Eric Osu, announced the certified results late Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
According to the official declaration, Bernard Baidoo garnered 18,199 votes, while Solomon Asumadu of the NPP secured 15,235 votes.
Owusu Patrick of the LPG party received 82 votes.
In total, 33,516 valid votes were cast, with 303 rejected ballots, bringing the total votes cast to 33,819.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the sitting NPP MP for Akwatia, who passed away in July after a short illness.
