Private legal practitioner Kweku Paintsil has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their handling of the alleged conversation between the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah-Dame, and Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance procurement case involving Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Paintsil accused the NDC of politicizing the issue rather than pursuing proper legal channels.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Wednesday, Paintsil urged the NDC to file a formal complaint if they believe the Attorney General acted unprofessionally, rather than resorting to press conferences to make their case.
"The NDC should just lodge a complaint at the rightful authorities if they feel the AG was unprofessional, but engaging in press conferences to settle matters is not the way to go," Adomonline.com quoted Paintsil.
The controversy stems from an audio tape released by the NDC on Tuesday, May 28, which they allege captures the Attorney General attempting to coerce Jakpa into implicating Dr. Ato Forson in the ongoing trial.
However, Paintsil argued that the allegations alone are not sufficient grounds for the Attorney General to resign.
He emphasized that press conferences are not the appropriate venue for addressing such serious claims and suggested that the NDC's actions are politically motivated, especially in an election year.
"Why should he resign? The claims are not substantial enough to form the basis for resignation. An allegation is not enough to force a resignation or punishment. If the NDC feels the issue is against the law, they should bring an application. If the conduct is unprofessional, they should take it to the General Legal Council. Otherwise, it just looks like political gamesmanship, especially in an election year," Paintsil stressed.
