...NDC fixes date for election of flagbearer

The NDC special delegates congress for the election of a flagbearer will take place in December. The December 7 congress will be the first ever congregation of the opposition party to elect a presidential candidate.

All previous flagbearers were endorsed by popular acclamation. This time, even if only one candidate submits his nomination, a vote will be carried. Analysts say the race for the presidential candidacy of the NDC in the 2004 elections will be keenly contested. Nominations for the position will open on the 7th of September and close on November 23rd. The party’s national executive has adopted a set of guidelines to govern the election.

General Secretary Dr. Nii Josiah- Aryeh says the guidelines are designed to enhance fairness and provide the candidates with maximum opportunity for showcasing their abilities and potentials. Two persons are already in the frontline of the race, former Vice President Professor John Atta Mills and former finance minister Dr. Kwesi Botchwey.

While the national executive is trying to ensure fair play as the race gets hot, their large turn out together with other leading members to welcome Professor Mills back from a duty tour abroad has raised eyebrows.
