The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Akatsi South Constituency of the Volta Region, Japhet Festus Gbede, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) demonstration, describing it as an attempt to regain political relevance and accusing the party of misplaced priorities and a lack of ideas.
The demonstration, organised under the theme “Yɛgye Yɛn Sika”, was aimed at demanding accountability over the money spent on evacuating Ghanaians from South Africa, particularly a reported GH¢16.4 million discrepancy.
Protesters also raised concerns about the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.
In a Facebook post on November 3, 2026, reacting to the demonstration, Gbede questioned its purpose and political significance.
He argued that the NPP should focus on offering practical solutions and engaging in meaningful discussions rather than relying on street protests.
Gbede further questioned what he considers the NPP's selective approach to accountability, particularly regarding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
He argued that the party should demonstrate similar enthusiasm in demanding the return of Ofori-Atta to Ghana to respond to outstanding investigations and accountability questions concerning his tenure as Finance Minister.
According to him, accountability cannot be convenient, selective, or determined by political affiliation.
He suggested that the NPP's credibility on accountability would be strengthened by applying the same standards to its former officials rather than appearing to reserve its strongest demonstrations for political opponents.
In his Facebook commentary, Gbede stated:
"NPP Demo is a noisy exhibition of desperation for political relevance, intellectual bankruptcy and misplaced priorities," he wrote.
He further urged the public not to be distracted by what he considers unnecessary political theatrics, insisting that Ghana deserves an opposition that is intellectually grounded, consistent in its demands, and committed to the broader national interest.
