NDC says it will not manipulate electoral system

Ghanaian Vice-President John Atta-Mills has said his ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not manipulate the electoral system to win the December 7 elections.

Addressing durbar and rallies during his four-day tour of the northern sector of the Western region, Prof. Mills, the NDC presidential candidate, said the party wants to win the election by fair means to enable it to carry through its development programmes in a peaceful climate.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to organise the elections in accordance with laid down regulations and without undue interruptions. The Vice President spoke at Sefwi Wiawso, Juabeso, Asankrangua, Essam, Enchi, Asawinso, Dadieso and Manso Amenfi.

Mills advised party members, supporters and the general public against destroying posters of other parties and causing trouble at rallies of other political parties. He said Ghanaians would not be disappointed when they re-elect NDC.

Miss Shirley Aryeetey, First Vice Chairperson of NDC, disclaimed accusations that the party has mismanaged the finances of the country. She said part of the income earned by the country from the export of its primary commodities is used for the development of rural communities through the District Assembly Common Fund.

Miss Aryeetey said a new NDC government would establish an agricultural development fund to assist farmers from which it would ensure regular supply of fertiliser and cutlasses at low prices through the district assemblies.

It will also continue with the programme of linking the farming communities with bridges to facilitate the transportation of farm produce to the market centres. Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, Chief Executive of Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, said NDC has always fulfilled its promise to the electorate and would continue to do so.

He said the provision of social infrastructure in rural areas is meant to attract investors to the districts. Mr Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Minister of Education, said the district education fund in the various districts has mobilised about 20 billion cedis to assist needy students. He said the NDC government has given more attention to education than any other government.
