The Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis Xavier-Sosu, has announced that teacher motivation would be a top priority for John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if they are elected in the upcoming elections.

The MP emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting teachers, who play a crucial role in shaping the future of the country.

Speaking at the 2nd edition of the Sosu Teacher’s Award, which celebrated the outstanding contributions of teachers in the Madina municipality, Xavier-Sosu highlighted the need for comprehensive policies that would uplift the teaching profession.

“When elected, John Dramani Mahama and the NDC will prioritize the welfare and motivation of teachers. We understand the vital role teachers play in our society, and it is time we show them the respect and support they deserve,” he stated.

Xavier-Sosu outlined several initiatives aimed at enhancing teacher motivation, including scrapping the controversial teacher licensing exams, which he argued have been demotivating rather than encouraging educators. “These exams do not encourage teachers; they discourage them. We need policies that uplift, not hinder,” he said.

He also called for the elimination of compulsory national service for teachers, arguing that every teacher already serves the nation every day through their work.

The Sosu Teacher’s Award, which cost over 170,000 cedis to organize, was a testament to the MP’s commitment to recognizing the hard work of educators. The awards, funded by the MP’s office, GETFund, and private donors, featured significant prizes, including a brand-new car and a motorcycle for the top-performing teachers.

During the ceremony, Xavier-Sosu stressed that motivating teachers is essential for improving education outcomes in Ghana. “We cannot expect excellence in our schools if we do not first take care of those who are responsible for nurturing our children’s minds. Under the next NDC government, teachers will receive the support and recognition they deserve,” he declared.

The MP’s remarks received widespread support from the attendees, who praised the commitment to teacher welfare and the recognition of the profession's challenges. With the promise of a more teacher-focused approach, the NDC aims to build a robust educational foundation for the future of Ghana.
