Ghana’s biggest opposition party says the current government used the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) programme as an avenue to “steal the tax payers’ money”.
The party says GYEEDA was used as a conduit to “collude, connive, create, loot and share” state resources.
At a media forum to assess the first year of the Mahama Administration, the NPP’s former Communications Director, Nana Akomea said the recent cancellation of the contracts under GYEEDA as well as attempts by the government to retrieve over Ghc55 million cedis paid to the service providers deserves no commendation.
He said the Government is treating the service providers with kid gloves and wondered why the Government has asked them to “kindly” go and meet the Attorney General “in their own sweet little time” over the matter.
Contracts cancelled by the government include the Rlg Communication's training module, Asongtaba Cottage Industry & Exchange Programme (ACI&EP) and the Better Ghana Management Services Limited, a subsidiary of Jospong Group, the parent company of Zoomlion.
The decision to cancel the contracts was reached following a series of meetings between the government and the parties.
A letter signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Alhaji Abdulai Yakubu, and addressed to the service providers read in part, "I am directed to convey to you, Government's decision to discontinue or terminate the contract with immediate effect.”
"You are hereby requested to continue to have engagements with the Attorney General's Department and Ministry of Justice on your liabilities to GYEEDA and ensure the refund of same to Government,” it added.
