Former President John Mahama has accused the Akufo Addo led government of misapplying the Zongo Development Fund.
Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Federation of Muslim Councils, Mr. Mahama said the funds which are meant to alleviate the plight of the Zongo communities have been channeled into planning and visiting weddings, naming ceremonies and also the cooking of waakye.
“There are not enough infrastructure people are crowded, the roads are poor so these are the things we want to double up. We don’t want to come and put up a Zongo Development Fund for show and use it to make football pitches and teach our women how to cook waakye, no. The issues facing the Zongo community are bigger than that. We are not doing a romantic Zongo Development Fund and using the monies to attend outdoorings and funerals and sharing rice when it’s time for fasting,” Mr Mahama stated.
In March 2019, the Minister for Inner-City and Zongo Development Hon. Abu-bakar Saddique Boniface announced that Government has committed GH?219.5 Million to the Zongo Development Fund as seed money.
Parliament passed the Zongo Development Fund Act 964 in 2017 to, among other functions, invest in basic services and strategic infrastructure in Zongo communities, support local businesses in such communities and provide social protection for the poor and vulnerable in those communities.
