NDC won’t change Ghana’s fortunes – Prof. Agyemang-Duah explains

Professor Baffuor Agyeman-Duah

Respected governance expert Professor Baffuor Agyeman-Duah has argued that if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wins, it will be unable to make significant changes to the economic situation of Ghana since the new government will be constrained by what the current government has done.

He noted that while Ghana has been successful with peaceful changes of governments, its democracy is not yielding the desired dividends for the citizenry.

He explained that notwithstanding the best intentions of the NDC, if it wins the 2024 General Elections, the NDC government will have to complete the current bailout program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with all the conditions attached.

“NDC taking over the government will not change much. They are not going to change anything because Ghana is already overburdened with debt.

"The youth are very agitated. But of course, somebody has to win, and the people of Ghana will decide,” he said on TV3’s current affairs show, The Keypoints, on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

He lamented that the youth of the country are despondent and hopeless due to the poor governance they have endured. He blamed the political class for failing to govern the country well for the benefit of all. However, his assertions were swiftly rejected by the Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo:

“I disagree with Prof. Unless Prof. is saying we should continue with what we have now, he can’t say that. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, with his experience in governance, is better placed under the circumstances to lead this country to where we want to go,” he asserted.
