The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress has written to the Ghana Police Service to express its desire to embark on a “peaceful walk” on Friday February 24, 2017.
“The purpose of our planned peaceful walk through some major streets of the capital, Accra, is to draw the general public and the international community’s attention to the culture of intimidation, fear mongering, and general harassment, dismissals and seizure of private properties of NDC officials and members – a lawless culture that has been introduced by the new NPP government since assuming power recently.
It is our belief and hope that with this prior notice, our lawfully planned walk will be given the needed police protection and guidance,” the letter dated February 9, 2017 and signed by the opposition party’s National Youth Organiser, Sidii Abubakar Musah, said.
The request comes on the heels of the National Service Scheme’s decision to dismiss all 205 persons recruited by its former Director, Dr Michael Kpessa-Whyte, in the evening of the term of the defunct NDC government.
Ussif Mohammed, the new Director of the Scheme, said the decision to send home the last-minute recruits followed the failure of the past director to comply with due process in the hiring of such individuals.
The planned walk also comes amid reports of the raiding of the private residences of some officials of the NDC in a bid to seize vehicles believed to be state property by men from National Security.
NDC National Organiser Kofi Adams and former Deputy Minister of Information James Agyenim Boateng have already reported of state security officials storming their compounds.
