Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has revealed her decision to run as president in this year’s general elections is not to split the votes of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The former first lady was over the weekend unanimously endorsed as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP).
In an interview with the BBC, Mrs. Rawlings stated that her entry into the presidential race is not to cause havoc to the NDC, which her husband is the founder, but to help improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.
She said: “The programme is to improve on the quality of life for Ghanaians. It has nothing to do with the NDC being split; it has nothing to do with anything else. It’s got everything to improve on the quality of life, helping those who have been left out of the cycle of development to come back into it and play their part.”
The NDP flagbearer explained that the breakaway party is an entity that has realised the negativities of governance and government and that of other parties of not allowing the structures to work properly and the NDP “is looking at a situation where we can actually help to improve the quality of life of people.”
She added that “young people will have a feel of belonging that the country also belongs to them and everybody will feel that there is hope.”
