NEWIG graduates 15 ladies in Building and Construction program

Fifteen young women graduated from an 8-month intensive course dubbed ‘Young Women in Building Construction’ on 27th June, 2019.

This initiative was powered by Network of Women In Growth (NEWIG), Ghana in partnership with EMpower Foundation.

Network of Women In Growth (NEWIG), Ghana, is a skills-development, non-profit, non-governmental organization established in 2002.

NEWIG provides vocational, driving and entrepreneurship training, specialist advice and helps to a wide range of clients in the area of small-scale enterprise development across the country.

NEWIG works to provide employment and empowerment opportunities that improve the lives of thousands of disadvantaged youth around Ghana.

In 2016, NEWIG decided to diversify its women economic empowerment programs by delving into the non-traditional livelihood space. Through these two initiatives were birthed, namely ‘Young Women In Professional Driving’ and ‘Young Women In Building Construction’.

In this maiden edition of ‘Young Women In Building Construction’, the 15 young ladies were taken through a two-week non-technical training at the NEWIG Women Empowerment Centre, in Tefle, where they treated topics in Gender Concepts, Leadership and Team Building, Assertiveness, Personal Branding and Customer Service.

The New Century Career Training Institute served as the collaborators for the Technical training in three disciplines; Electrical Installation, Plumbing and Draughtsmanship. Twelve (12) of them graduated with NVTI Certificate I while Three (3) graduated with NVTI Proficiency I Certificate.

In attendance was the Hon. Baffour- Awuah, Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, who served as the Special Guest of Honour. In his speech, he encouraged the ladies to attach seriousness and a level of excellence in what they do.

He bemoaned the attitude of Ghanaian workers especially with regards to time management and charged all workers to be time conscious and punctual. He was impressed by the good job done by NEWIG and encouraged others to take advantage of such training.

Dr. Rose Mensah-Kutin, Executive Director of Abantu For Development (Ghana) chaired the occasion. The Executive Director of National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Mrs. Mawusi Nudekor Awity, Ag. Executive Director of NEWIG, Mrs. Mawulawoe Anato-Dumelo, as well as other dignitaries, were in attendance.

In her speech, the Ag. Executive Director charged the young ladies to take advantage of the opportunity given them and excel to greater heights.
