NGO embarks on adult literacy project

Kumasi, Dec. 6, GNA - A Christian Non-Governmental Organisation, the African Rural Evangelistic Association, has embarked on a project to train adult illiterates on how to read and write in the local dialects. Fifty adult learners are already being trained, since the take off of the project in June, this year.

Even though they are currently being taught how to read and write in Twi and Ewe, the project would be broadened to cover other languages peculiar to the area.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the project under the theme: "Adult Education, Priority of the Government" at Anloga in Kumasi on Monday, Reverend Frank Agbeko, chairman of the Association, said the project was designed to train and equip 100 learners with skills in reading and writing in the local languages annually. He said the focus of the project would not be solely on reading and writing only, but also how to use the knowledge and skills acquired in conducting their businesses and to carry out their various economic activities.

Rev Agbeko advised the learners to avail themselves of the opportunity offered them by the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the government and literacy programmes of NGOs to broaden their scope to enable them cope with the challenges of today's world.

Mrs Dorothy Morrison, the Oforikrom Adult Education Supervisor, asked the learners not to perceive the programme as a waste of time and resources but see it as an avenue that would help them to understand what was happening around them and other parts of the world, as well as broaden their knowledge to boost their businesses.
