The Better Ghana Management Services Limited, a non-governmental organisation, (NGO), organized a two-day workshop for 100 health promotion officers and assistants, to equip participants with skills to enable them to educate communities on health issues, in Sekondi on Friday.

The participants, who were drawn from the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, were educated on disease control, environmental health, data collection and report writing.

Miss Naomi Anoff, Western Regional Coordinator of the NGO, said similar workshops were being organized in all the 17 districts of the region, to train 526 health promotion officers and assistants.

She said the workshop was to update the knowledge of the participants and equip them with relevant skills to enable them to educate the people on environmental health, food safety, nutrition and healthy life styles.

Miss Anoff said, globally, there was increasing focus on preventive health care because it was cost saving.

She said the Government would support the NGO to resurrect health promotion programmes, to create awareness through systematic, consistent and interactive public health education on chronic diseases such as malaria, cholera, tuberculosis and flu.

She said this programme sought to utilize the potentials of graduates of Schools of Hygiene and private health training Institutions and Senior High School graduates throughout the country, who for lack of vacancies in the public sector, were not employed by the health sector.**
