NGO to Tackle Unemployment

A new no-governmental organisation has been formed with the aim to address the unemployment problem in the country.

Known as the Employment and Development Corps, the NGO, which has its headquarters in Accra will operate nation-wide.

It will implement programmes training the youth agriculture carpentry and others trades and equip them with such skills that will make them to gain employment to sustain themselves.

It will also offer career advisory services with the aim of getting people trained for the most suitable jobs.

Briefing the press in Accra, Mr. Henery Gidi, Executive Secretary of the NGO, said that because of unemployment in the country majority of the youth end up as street children and engage in prostitution, armed robbery and other social vices. He announced that the NGO would formally be launched in August.

The Greater Accra Regional co-ordinator, Mr. Benjamin Sowah, said that the organisation would start registering all unemployed youth living in Accra from July 23 2001, and appealed to all to be endeavour to get registered.
