Accra, Nov. 17, GNA - An Akyem based nongovernmental organization (NGO was on Friday inaugurated with the aim of assisting needy and brilliant students in the Akyem area with their educational and health needs.

Ntiamoah Foundation, the NGO, would among other things assist educational institutions with infrastructure and improve health facilities in the area.

Mr Robert Kwaku Asante, Executive Director of the Foundation, said it would promote healthy living standards and educate people on disease prevention and assist needy families financially to undertake major surgeries.

"We will also aid committed and hardworking teaching staff in the Akyem area with teaching tools to improve learning," he said. Mr Asante said the Foundation would organise fund-raising activities in Ghana and abroad to help to achieve its aims and objectives.

The NGO presented an ambulance worth 125 million cedis to the Birim North District Hospital.

Ms Esther Dapaah, Member of Parliament for Birim North, who chaired the function, noted that education and health were key issues of national concern hence the need for NGOs to assist the Government to address such concerns.

Dr Maureen Martey, who represented the Minister of Health, pledged the Ministry's commitment to work closely with the Foundation to attain good health for the people. She encouraged the Foundation to promote the adoption of healthier lifestyles by advocating good nutrition, proper sanitation and adequate rest.

"Emphasis must be put on daily activities that will prevent regular visits to the hospitals." Dr Martey expressed the hope that NGOs in the health sector would streamline their programmes to correspond to the new paradigm and policies of the Sector Ministry.
