NGO to establish 30 ICT Centres for schools

Tamale, Jan. 19, GNA - An international Non-Governmental Organisation working to promote education and child welfare, is to establish 30 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Resource Centres in selected second cycle schools in the country.

Poverty Concern Ghana/Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisation will also provide infrastructure for selected schools in Northern Ghana and sponsor more than 500 brilliant needy students in second cycle schools and tertiary institutions under its five year development programme.

Mr Abdul Razak Abdulai, Executive Director of the organisation, announced this in Tamale on Wednesday when he presented assorted items to the Tamale Children's Home at Nyohini.

The items included a computer and printer, rice, milk, toys, footwear and educational materials all valued at about 120 million cedis.

Mr Abdulai said the organisation would establish 18 vocational institution centres and create 2,000 jobs for the unemployed youth through the technical and vocational training with start-up capital. He said complementing the basic needs of orphanages and distressed schools with teaching and learning materials were some of his outfit's priority.

He announced that last year, the organisation organised HIV/AIDS education programmes in schools and communities in Northern Ghana on the harmful effects of the pandemic.

Madam Augustina Ouainoo, Supervisor of the Home, said financial support from the government for the home was not forthcoming, adding that it was becoming increasingly difficult to provide medical service, school fees and feeding for the children.

She said the Orphanage had no means of transport and was also facing water shortage.

She also expressed concern that private developers were encroaching on the Home's land.
