Apam (C/R), Feb. 25, GNA - A Germany-based non-governmental organisation, Schulwalder for West Africa E.V., is to sponsor a tree planting programme in four senior secondary schools in the Gomoa District of the Central Region.

The programme was initiated by Nana Edu Effirim X, chief of Apam and a member of Gomoa-Assin Traditional Council and would cover the compounds and surroundings of the selected senior secondary schools. The institutions include Gomoa Secondary/Technical at Gomoa-Dawurampong, Apam Secondary, Mozano Secondary/Technical and Potsin Senior Secondary Schools.

Disclosing this to the Ghana News Agency at Apam on Tuesday, Nana Effirim said representatives of the organisation led by Dr. Sam Essiamah, a Ghanaian Forest Research Scientist at the University of Geolligen in Germany, have already inspected some schools at Apam. He said the team agreed to meet him in March this year, to finalise arrangements to ensure early take-off of the programme.

In a special message which preceded the meeting, Dr. Essiamah said the action of his organisation followed a GNA news item carried by the website in which Nana Effirim strongly advised Ghanaians to take protect the country's forest resources.

Dr. Essiamah expressed the hope that stool elders and other stakeholders in Apam would team up with Nana Effirim to facilitate the joint tree planting programme which Schulwalder for West Africa E.V. and Nana Effirim have initiated.

He announced the organisation's plan to establish tree seedling nurseries to support the programme.
