Kumasi, July 19, GNA- Dr Richard Anane, Minister of Roads and Transport, has stated that the launching of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is a clear manifestation of government's resolve to give the people affordable quality health care delivery. He therefore asked Ghanaians to embrace the scheme since it was the only way to ensure affordable and quality health care delivery. Dr Anane was speaking at a sensitisation and fund-raising durbar of the Bohyen Electoral Area Mutual Health Organisation (BEAMHO) at Bohyen in Kumasi on Sunday.
The insurance scheme started last year now has a membership of about 2,000.
Dr Anane cautioned committees that would be entrusted with the collection of the premiums to take care of the money so as to facilitate the smooth implementation of the scheme.
He said Ghana being a developing country where access to medical care was difficult; there was the need to pool resources to ensure that people had affordable medical care.
Dr (Mrs) Agatha Akua Bonney, Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Health Services, commended residents of the Bohyen electoral area for their efforts to improve their health care delivery.
Nana Antwi Boasiako II, Bohyenhene, said it was high time Ghanaians were made to understand that the health insurance scheme was a better option for health care delivery.
Mr D.Y. Gyamfi, the Co-ordinator of BEAMHO, said the premium for the scheme was 6,000 cedis and members were expected to pay this in three consecutive months for the scheme to be implemented this year.
