The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that it will begin the Ghana Card registration for minors aged between 6 and 14 years, starting on October 7, 2024.

This initiative is part of the government’s effort to ensure every citizen is included in the national identification system.

Speaking at a Stakeholder Engagement in Accra on September 26, 2024, Deputy Director of Operations at the NIA, Alfred Gazari, indicated that the exercise would be conducted in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority, (NHIA) in 170 operational districts across the country.

"These are the districts that we are going to operate from October 7 up till March for the first phase. In the same districts the NHIA, also have their staff, because we are going to use their staff in addition to our temporary staff, we are going to deploy for the exercise," he explained.

Alfred Gazari further explained that the primary focus of the exercise will be on registering children who are in schools or in children's homes.

"We don't just move into any place and start registering. What we do is to identify the place that is suitable for registration. We give that place a centre number, then we gazette the centre number, to make it legal, before we can go there to do the registration. All the schools that we are going to do the registration, they have all been given centre numbers and those centre numbers have been gazetted," he noted.

He noted that to facilitate a smooth registration exercise, a Commissioner of Oaths and District Registration Officers will oversee the process.

"We also have district registration officers and a Commissioner of Oaths. We are expecting that the child comes with a birth certificate. In case a child comes, without a birth certificate or the required primary documents. They will be a Commissioner of Oaths who will take you through the process, to ensure that whatever you are going to do is the right thing. The judicial service has trained those people, they have licensed them, and they are working legally. The teams will be in the schools and welcome children for the registration," he stated.
