Mr. Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), has underscored the critical need for media accuracy in serving the public interest, rather than focusing on the identity of information sources.

Speaking at a media forum on the 2024 election in Kumasi, Mr. Ayeboafo cautioned that if the media, viewed as a key stakeholder in Ghana’s democratic process, fails to meet public expectations, it could lead to significant consequences. He warned media professionals against uncritically disseminating statements from politicians who may prioritize personal agendas over factual reporting. "We must be vigilant and discerning in our coverage," he stated, urging journalists to uphold truth and integrity in their work.

He encouraged journalists to actively engage in promoting democracy and peace without bias. "When issues arise, we must not shy away from speaking out, but we must do so with care and responsibility," he advised, reinforcing the need for balanced and responsible journalism.

Additionally, Mr. Ayeboafo highlighted the expertise of journalists, comparing their role to that of academics, and called for a renewed commitment to uphold the integrity of the journalism profession, recognizing its essential role in society.

He further stressed the importance of the Electoral Commission, media practitioners, and political leaders in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic stability, warning that irresponsible actions from any sector could compromise these efforts.

The forum, organized by the Ashanti Regional Media Advisory Committee (ARMAC) of the NMC, aimed to equip media participants with tools to combat misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation ahead of the December 2024 polls.

Mr. Francis Osei Nsiah, Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, also assured attendees of the Commission’s commitment to a credible, fair, and transparent election.

As Ghana approaches a critical electoral period, Mr. Ayeboafo’s remarks serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility shared by all stakeholders in preserving a peaceful and democratic environment.

The forum concluded with an interactive session, allowing media participants to ask questions, share experiences, and propose strategies to ensure a peaceful election.

The National Media Commission remains an advocate for high journalism standards, urging both media professionals and the public to work collaboratively toward an informed and engaged democratic society.
