The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, Bright Ofori-Ampofo, has sued the Eastern Regional Deputy Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Wilfred Kwaku Boateng, also known as Kade Boateng, for defamation.

In a writ issued by his lawyer, George Afful of Appiade Chambers, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, it is alleged that Kade Boateng made defamatory remarks against Ofori-Ampofo and his wife during a programme on TV XYZ.

According to a transcript of Kade Boateng’s comments reproduced in the writ, the NDC Deputy Regional Secretary, while commenting on the strike action by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in June, accused the NPP Constituency Chairman of colluding with his wife, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, who is the GRNMA president, to undermine the government.

“In their natural and ordinary meaning, the words broadcast by the defendant to the entire world meant, and were understood to mean, that the plaintiff and his wife had conspired to destroy the ruling government and cause disaffection toward the NDC party.

“As a result, the plaintiff’s reputation has been seriously damaged, and he has suffered public shame, hatred, distress, and embarrassment,” the writ stated.

The writ further noted that, contrary to Kade Boateng’s claim of having a personal relationship with Bright Ofori-Ampofo, no such relationship exists, as the two have never met.

It added that several attempts to get Wilfred Kwaku Boateng to retract and apologise have failed, prompting the suit, which includes a claim of GH¢5,000,000 in aggravated and exemplary damages.

The suit names XYZ Broadcasting Limited, operators of TV XYZ, and Wilfred Kwaku Boateng as the first and second defendants, respectively.

Other reliefs sought by the plaintiff include a declaration that the words broadcast were defamatory, an order compelling Boateng to retract and apologise, costs including legal fees, and any other remedy the court may deem appropriate.
