A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, Asamoah Gyamfi, has described Kumasi as a ‘Gangsterism’ zone where the Ghana Police Service is failing to combat lawbreakers for causing mayhem in broad daylight.

According to him, the police must be able to stand on their authority, to fight these criminals so as citizens in the metropolis will not live in fear and panic.

“In a nation, if a certain pattern of terror is going on, it’s not good that is the issue. It’s not a normal robbery that is going on in Kumasi; it’s a persistent, first led by a group of thugs who took hostage of the metropolis for more than 48 hours.

“…This demonstrated a high level security failure. The Defense Minister, Minister of Interior and IGP would have resigned if this happened in America. Because the basic principle of the police is to defend,” the NPP man was reacting to recent Kumasi killings.

Speaking on an Accra-based Adom FM, Mr. Gyamfi alleged that police in Kumasi is aware of various gangs but failing to fight them due to some political affiliations with the gangs.

“What I am seeing is that, gangsterism is what is going on in Kumasi which the police knows. I know a student in KNUST whose phone was stolen and reported it to his CID friend after telling him which area the phone was stolen, could you imagine the following day the student had his phone from the CID?

“…this really tells you that there is a security lapse in the city (Kumasi) so the police must be vibrant and fight this people. The Kumasi situation is assuming political proportions and some of them are affiliated to the political parties and use that as a conduit to achieve their aim,” he alleged
