Borrowed Money For Akufo-Addo’s Campaign & Refusing To Pay

News Desk Report

Perhaps, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Justice Joyce Adeline Bamford-Addo, apart from ensuring that Parliament discharges its constitutionally mandated duty as lawmakers, must take drastic measures to instill discipline among Members of Parliament (MPs), so that, few of them do not bring the Honourable title into disrepute.

It is undisputable that Ghana’s Parliament in recent times seems to be harbouring people who do not deserve the title: ‘honourable’; following how some Members of Parliament have continued to attract media headlines as result of their dishonourable activities.

Denigrating the sanctity of the august house, MPs, over the years have not only come under serious criticism for not living up to public expectation, but their personal engagements which oft tend to be disgraceful to the symbol they represent.

The latest to be captured by The Informer radar for another despicable behavior, is the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) MP for Fanteakwah, Mr. Amankwa Kwabena Asiamah, who is on record to have swindled a customer of his rural bank.

Narrating his ordeal to the Informer via telephone, Mr. Joseph Kwame Appiah (the customer) said Hon. Amankwa Asiamah, through one Samuel Owusu Appiah, the Manager of his rural bank at Anyinam approached him, September last year, for some financial assistance which he honoured; but the honourable has refused to pay, since.

According to him, he had a telephone call from the Bank Manager, where he indicated that his director (Hon. Asiamah) wants to speak to him.

As a customer, he never hesitated and it was during their conversation that he (Asiamah) requested that he borrowed him an amount of Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢50,000.00) to enable him pay debts owed some National Democratic Congress (NDC) activists.

Although, he was unable to meet all his demand, he managed to raise Forty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢40,000.00) and paid it into his account at the rural bank, for him to use in solving his problem.

According to Mr. Joseph Kwame Appaih, apart from the Bank Manager calling to acknowledge receipt, Hon. Asiamah also later called to thank him and promises to pay back in month’s time; but till date has not honoured his pledge.

“My brother, upon persistent pressure, he sent me Four Thousand Cedis (GH¢4,000.00) through the brother just last week, precisely on the 16th May, 2012; and since then all attempts to reach him has prove futile”, he pointed out.

“I tried several times to reach him but his mobile phone was off and I don’t know what to do”, worried Appiah grieved.

Asked what action he intends to take since all attempts to get Hon. Asiamah pay back his money is becoming difficult, he said he asked his Lawyers to institute a legal action against him.

“For the gross insincerity, I will do everything possible to ensure that Asiamah is disgraced”, he concludes.

However, the MP’s close associate (name withheld), has hinted that the MP claims he borrowed the money to support his flagbearer’s campaign.

Several calls placed to Hon. Asiamah’s cellular phone for his response proved futile as the phone has been switched of. Even, when The Informer managed to get through the Bank Manager, he refuses to pick up as of press time yesterday.

It is as a result of this and many unparliamentary behaviors on the part of some MPs that we hold the view that ‘Madam Speaker’ should take the necessary measures to restore sacredness of the house and call Members involved in such disgraceful acts to order.

Stay tuned for more juicy updates on Hon. Amankwa Kwabena Asiamah and his Fanteakwa Rural Bank.
