NPP, NDC have failed the tolerance test – Akomea

The two main political parties in the country, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the biggest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have not done a good job at preaching tolerance to their supporters, Communication Director of the NPP, Nana Akomea has indicated.

Mr Akomea’s concerns come on the heels of the killing of an NPP supporter in the Asawase constituency on Friday following clashes between pro-Afoko supporters and NPP members, who support the party’s National Executive Committee’s decision to suspend Mr Paul Afoko indefinitely, as chairman.

The deceased, 37-year-old Abubakar Saddiq was allegedly involved in a brawl with other party members, who had joined constituency executives to picket the party’s headquarters in Accra Thursday.

He is reported to have been part of a group supporting the party’s decision to suspend Mr. Afoko and had joined others to lockout and beat pro-Afoko members upon their return from Accra.

Commenting on the matter on Joy FM's Newsfile Saturday Nana Akomea said the NDC and the NPP have done a bad job at preaching tolerance to their rank and file.

“We have cases of violence occurring on a regular basis where because of some disagreement, party offices are burnt, state properties are destroyed and people attacked,” he said.

“It is bad that disagreements at the local or national level will involve weapons that can kill people. The two big parties, our supporters seem to be going along that line, and that is distressing,” he bemoaned.
