NPP/NDC youth clash claims one life

Tamale, April 23, GNA - A Junior Secondary School graduate was shot dead and his body burnt in renewed clashes between New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) youths in Tamale on Wednesday.

A brother of the deceased told the Police in presence of the GNA that the victim, Master Gazali Fuseini, 18, was reading when he heard shouts that he was under attack and in an attempt to run away, he was shot by unknown assailants who later set his body ablaze.

Several houses and an NPP campaign van were also burnt.

The cause of the violence was not immediately known but it was believed to be linked to Tuesday's clash between the youth of the two parties. Business activities in the Tamale Municipality had virtually c! ome to a halt as a result of the confusion with several commuters stranded at the lorry station.

A joint Police/Military team had earlier arrested one Osman Mohammed believed to be among the combatants and during a search on him, they found a talisman, an axe and a knife.

Latest reports from Tamale say two soldiers have been killed in exchanges with the rioting groups this afternoon. The chaotic situation in Tamale which erupted on Monday deteriorated this afternoon when fighting escalated.
At least four persons, all civilians in addition to the two soldiers have been confirmed dead. Reports say, information vans have been going round asking the people to seek shelter at the nearest safe place.
JOY FM correspondents in Tamale say in spite of heavy security presence in the town, supporters of both parties have been engaging in street fights, especially in areas considered strongholds of either party.
Security personnel have been patrolling the streets to dispel crowds. Simmering tension between the two groups erupted last Sunday after a clean-up exercise by supporters of the NDC and continued through Tuesday with clashes at the Tamale Central market and elsewhere.
A number of people sustained injuries in the clashes while several properties were also destroyed.
