The Hohoe North constituency youth organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. George Egbenunyah, has categorically denied ever hatching an assassination attempt on the life of the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Evans Atta Mills.
In a statement in reaction to an allegation made by the Central Regional secretary of the NDC, the youth organizer described it as a "figment of somebody's own imagination" calculated to tarnish his hard won reputation.
Egbenunyah further rebutted claims by the NDC regional secretary that he was the Hohoe North district coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the driver of the pick-up, which allegedly ran into Prof. Mills' convoy.
The NDC Central Regional Secretary, Peter Light Koomson, accused Egbenunyah of masterminding an assassination attempt on the NDC flagbearer during his recent tour of the Volta Region.
According to the NDC, it could not fathom the circumstances under which the white Nissan double cabin pick-up with registration number GR 54 A used by the occupants "clandestinely and aggressively" ran into the way of the NDC flagbearer after it had given way to the entourage and the police vehicle escorting Prof. Mills.
Explaining further, Egbenunyah said there was "no point in time that their vehicle ran into the way of Prof. Mills' convoy or even interfered with his campaign trip."
"Going by what has been deliberately planted in the media, one would wonder how a Nissan pick-up would run into a Land Cruiser", the youth organizer noted.
He therefore asked the NDC to focus on how to redeem its sinking image in the Volta Region, saying that the party's propaganda activities showed their frustration and jitters at its imminent defeat in the 2004 general elections.
